I have experienced all the scenarios regarding the web company. The situation tends to repeat where a web company exploits the fact that they hold the power to change the website by the ways you described. Primarily demanding disproportionate prices for minor changes. You could say that the web company will bend over backwards to get your business and once they hold the codes they hold your success by ransom. I chose to find website template services that offer user friendly backend interfaces where I can make and observe all the changes I like. One in particular is bandzoogle.com which is brilliant for constructing and maintaining a website with a music entertainment theme, equipped with e-commerce and very reasonable rates. My question for you is, have you found a good online do-it-yourself website service?

I`m slightly behind time as i have only managed to watch episode 4 just now.
I would like to share my experiences with service providers.
I had an ecommerce shop with lycos that was quite simply rubbish.
I had a local web developer set up the "bones" of the site and then i took over filling in the products etc.
The problem came then google couldnt read the site as the webiste address was too long and not accessable.
I was getting a hit rate of 10-15 per week and no sales.
Lycos in January then closed its ecommerce division (to my relief as i was in a two year contract)
I moved to ekm power shop after looking at the options and i have to say that it is great, i get 15-20 hits a day and i have had a number of direct and indirect sales.
The staff at ekm powershop are super , they transfered my shop from lycos at no charge and every time that i phone their help line they give me a knowlegdeable answer to all my questions,there is alos a detailed online q+a section.
This option suits me at the moment as it lets me learn and see the potential of the web. By the way i am not getting paid by ekm to give this glowing recommendation.

Greetings Mark. A couple of points...I noticed your 'deliberate' spelling errors--weather and strugleing.
I was a victim of a web builder, (i've yet to meet a so called webmaster) who tried to charge exorbitant fees for minor changes to my site and always took days to make any changes and then not what I actually wanted and specified. And then ownership of the site was another issue. I have since come across many other people dis-satisfied in similar ways.
To me Web builders are trained graphic artists and most are excellent at this and tec' experts. Most DO-NOT have a sales mindset or sales know how that is so important for both On and Offline marketing sites.
It was from this frustration that I started my own Email Biz Booster business to mentor small to large businesses on incorporating simple Internet marketing strategies in their business and on their sites. We do encounter some huffing and puffing from Web builders with our interferance in their relationship with 'their' clients. So any advice on this BIG issue will assist many I am sure.

Hello Mark, as usual you have done a sterling job here with Episode 4. I sort out my own pages, so I do not have the hassles re web companies, another great episode, and I look forward to many more in the future.

Hello Mark. I use an on-line web building system (WebEden's SiteMaker) where I control what I want, when, and where. I have tried several such systems and this is the best so far in that it is very flexible, pages load very quickly, there are numerous add-ons, and it costs much less per month than others I have tried, BUT (and it is a big but) there are some things that are seemingly elementary, that are lacking. For example, one builds a page by creating an element (say a text box), adjusting font, colour, etc., and placing it where it is wanted. But text goes to the vertical edges of the box , i.e. no margins . To create a margin one can put a slightly bigger box of the same colour underneath it, but you cannot permanently lock the two together.
Also, because (I think) is is Flash based, you cannot insert snippets of html code.

One suggests improvements such as these, but the answer is always manyana! The system sells 'very nicely thank-you', so why fix it if it isn't broke?

Jenifer - I would aviod trying to send video in an email itself as this will either get blocked or filtered as spam. It's much better to email a link to a web page which containd the video.

I have looked for different types of changes but not having a knowledge of web design I do not know how difficult or how long it takes to do the task.The web company can then charge whatever they think knowing that their fee could be anything.
